All About I-20
What is an I-20 form?
The I-20 form serves as a certificate of eligibility for nonimmigrant student status. It is granted by a school certified under the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) and confirms that a student has been admitted to a full-time study program and has demonstrated adequate financial resources to sustain themselves in the United States. Students typically receive a Form I-20 from their Designated School Official (DSO). The specific I-20 form issued depends on whether the school the student plans to attend has F-1 or M-1 status. Once the required fee is paid, each accepting school will send an I-20 form.
However, it's crucial to complete the I-20 Form specifically for the school you intend to enroll in. The I-20 form provided to international students is officially titled the 'Certificate of Eligibility,' as it enables candidates to apply for an F-1 student visa at a U.S. embassy or consulate in their home country.
Why is the I-20 Form Necessary?
According to the Department of Homeland Security, "Form I-20 is a crucial document that should be safeguarded, as it will be required at various stages throughout your international student journey."
While the immigration process may appear lengthy and demanding, obtaining the I-20 form simplifies the remaining steps. If you have any questions about it, don't hesitate to seek guidance from the official who provided you with the form.
Please note that applying for a US Student Visa is not possible without an I-20 form. However, possessing an I-20 does not guarantee visa approval. You must fulfill all the requirements established by US authorities to obtain it. Additionally, remember to bring the I-20 Form with you for your visa interview.
